‘I remember the first game I went to at Vale Park, taking a short cut, climbing up the rubble at the back of the away terrace on Hamill Road. At half time, Vale were 2:0 up, but the funny thing was, the old blokes at the tea stand were so pessimistic and dour, that they were already talking about how it would never last! There was something about this self-deprecation and a certain gallows humour, that I guess comes from watching a team that continually under-achieves which I warmed to.’
Conrad Tracy’s book focuses on notions of community and friendship through the home and away games of Port Vale in the mid 90’s.
